Political Junkie Headquarters

The 2009 Colorado Legislative Session has come to a close. We had some amazing victories (and a few losses).  We'll be updated this page shortly to give you a recap of what happened this year. For now, let us know what you think we should work on next--Health Care Reform, Renewable Energy, etc. Shoot us an email at info (at) neweracolorado (dot) org

The 6 E's

The 6 E's are the issues that guide all of New Era Colorado's work. Each year we update our legislative agenda to include a few actions and lobby campaigns for each E.  Go ahead--Pick your fancy. Click on the links to send a quick pre-written letter to your representatives on the piece of legislation. We'll be adding and updating legislation as things move around.

  • Education

HB1057: Parental Leave. Allows parents to take unpaid leave a few days a year to participate in their child's school functions.
  • Economic Strength

    SB31: Clean Tech

HB1064: Colorado Poverty Taskforce. Creates a taskforce to study the causes and solutions to poverty in Colorado.

  • Election Reform

HB1160: Online Voter Registration. This one is New Era's sweet spot. It creates an option for voters to register and change their address on the Secretary of State's secure website. Heck yes.
  • Equal Rights

SB88: Domestic Partner Benefits for State Employees. Extends benefits for state employees to a domestic partner rather than just family.

HB1260: Designated Beneficiaries. Allows individuals to designate someone as their beneficiary other than a direct family member or spouse. This impacts people in same-sex relationships, but it also extends much further than that.

  • Environment

SB51: Renewable Energy Finance Act. Creates low-interest financing options for people who want to invest in energy efficiency upgrades or renewable energy projects for their home or property.

HB109: Carbon Monoxide Detectors. Requires carbon monoxide detectors in new buildings.

    SB16: coming soon.

  • 'Ealthcare

SB131: Physical Education Requirement. Requires a minimum amount of physical education in schools.

SB225: Birth Control Protection Act. In November's election, our ballot held a measure to outlaw abortion as well as several types of birth control. Fortunately, this did not pass. For future assurance, this bill serves to legally distinguish between medically acceptable birth control methods and abortion. Senate Bill 225 will help to protect access to birth control.

           HB1116: Dental Insurance for Kids.
