Mike Connery said it. Five of us youth, state-based organizations are aligning forces and yes, we're forming like Voltron. Mr. Connery sure has a sweet way with words.
Check out his blog about the Bus Federation.
And in case you need a refresher on Voltron.
ps. Mike Connery will be in Colorado on Tues April 15th in Denver, and Weds April 16th in Boulder, on a book tour for his new book, Youth to Power. We'll have more details up soon!

Online voter registration. Seems obvious, right? Well, only two states have implemented real online voter registration (Arizona and Washington). Let's make Colorado the third! New Era drafted and brought this legislation to the legislature and Senator Ken Gordon is championing it for us in the Senate. It's a simple, innovative policy that cuts much of the confusing red tape involved in registering to vote. It will finally be voted on the Senate floor this week!
Why Online Voter Registration is a common sense policy: -
Saves time and money for election officials because it lessens data entry and administrative duties -
Increases voter accessibility for young people because it creates an easy way to change our registration when we move -
Prevents common mistakes made on paper forms due to either lack of legibility or missing information This takes the exact same paper form and puts it online to give you the option to fill out the form with a keyboard instead of a pen. And instead of having to print the form, sign it, and mail it in, you just click "submit". Who ever thought democracy could be so easy? Click here to write your State Senator and ask for their support on SB040, Online Voter Registration!

Fact: There are more payday lending stores than McDonalds in Colorado. Colorado's House Bill 1310 addresses the problem of predatory lenders who charge exorbitant fees for people who borrow money in advance of their paycheck. It's time for Colorado to put protective measures in place to curb the exploitation of people by these companies. According to the Colorado Attorney General's Office: - The average annual interest rate on payday loans in Colorado is 353% APR.
- The average payday borrower paid $544 in fees on a payday loan of $343.
- About 2 out of every 3 payday loans (65%) are refinance-type loans.
- The average Colorado borrower took out nine payday loans in 2006.
- Reducing the exorbitant fees charged on payday loans will put $75 million back into the pockets of hard working Coloradans.

To take a break from the onslaught of news and ridiculousness of the Presidential candidates, I figured it might be a good idea to talk about John Mcain's hot daughter, Meghan. I was introduced to her blog, McCain Blogette just yesterday and have decided we're meant to be together. Which is kind of weird to begin with, right? I look at her pictures of her and her friends and can tell I would absolutely hate hanging out with her, plus her dad is Walnuts McCain...but love is a mystery, just like that Marshall Tucker Band song. ANYWAYS... She supported John Kerry (just like I did!) She thinks Barack Obama is sexy (just like the 18-30 demographic does!) She was an art history major (oh. cool?) She listens to Sleater Kinney (She needs to be my girlfriend. Now.) If anyone has any tips on how I can impress Meghan McCain and make her live with me forever, shoot me an e-mail. |

New Era Colorado launched our high school voter registration and outreach program this month. We'll be visiting high school Juniors and Seniors around Colorado to talk about the important issues they face as upcoming voters in the 2008 Election. If you would like a few members of New Era to come to one of your high school classes to do register voters, or know of a class that would like us to talk about the awesomeness that is youth public engagement, let us know by shooting us an email. |

We knew that 2008 was going to be a transformative election--but we never expected it would be this exciting this early.
When we started this organization, we were told it wouldn't work. We were told young people don't care, don't vote, and we would just be wasting our time.
Well, we've been proving them wrong with every chance we've gotten and every vote that's been cast. Now, we're ready for more! Because of the amazing energy we've seen in 2008 so far, we are amping up early and increasing our goals and programs to be bigger than ever.
But here's the catch: If we're going to kick as much ass as we all want, we're going to need your help. Today we are kicking off our "Be a Player" Monthly Membership Campaign. We're looking for at least 100 of you to be a player--a monthly member at an amount of your choice. Whether it's $5 or $500, it helps.
By becoming a monthly member you'll be joining a community that stands on the shoulders of progress. We carry the knowledge that a vote is not just something to be counted, but is something to be heard. For young voices to be heard, young votes must be cast, and New Era Colorado is helping to give a new generation a megaphone in 2008.
If you've been meaning to get involved, but just haven't found the time, here's your chance to help! Sign up now and become one of the 100. Help us build to last and be a part of the new progressive era that's already well on its way.

Check this video out! Jack Nicholson is endorsing Hillary Clinton
for president. It's pretty cool that Hillary's got Jack on her back and
the ad's quite clever. The only thing that really got me was Jack saying "there's nothing on this earth sexier, believe me gentlemen, than a woman you have to salute in the morning."

Ralph Nadar has announced his candidacy on Sunday and made an appearance on Meet the Press Sunday morning. Nadar, who's running as an independent in this year's election is fighting the attack's of several political pundit's views on his legacy. Asked by both Russert and Anderson Cooper whether or not running again, for the fourth time in a row, will deface his legacy as a man who fights for the American citizen. According to Nadar the answer is NO- he's back and he's better than ever. Although attacked for ruining the 2000 election and the 2004 election, Russert asked Nader how he would respond to "you've done it again" if the Democrats lose the election this year. He simply stated: "Not a chance. If the Democrats can't landslide the Republicans this year, they ought to just wrap up, close down, emerge in a different form." Does Nader have what it takes?
